Camping:
If there is a trailer Dump station, I didn't find it, that is the only thing keeping this from a 5 star review.
No cell service. Some of the electrical boxes are 50+/- feet from where you would park your camper or set up the tent.
I was able to reserve a spot on Saturday night, a couple days out. But the campground was full when we arrived.
There is solid greenery between most sites, but many Inner loop sites back to each other, ones on 26-50 inner loop are best for groups. The sites are good sized.
No bad spots, just spots for different needs.
The whole lake is "no wake", people seemed to be respecting the rule.
This is a great park for stargazing. It's a quite rustic site great for a getaway.
Great place awesome fishing, great kayak. And you can either take an RV or a Tent. And all the employees are polite knowledgeable about the area a lot of good stuff to do while you're there. A great place to take the family.
Loved the camp sites. Clean cheap with electric. Allowed dogs. Loved that. Fished caught a huge carp! And love that it's a dim light zone so you can see all the stars at night.
This is a beautiful place to visit. With the wonderful beach, boat access, and camping this could be one of my favorite spots for a long weekend.
The only drawbacks were:
1: No shower house nor flush toilets.
2: People put fish remains in the dumpsters, so camping downwind from them is not fun.
With those things in mind, it's still a great place to come. Kayaking was wonderful on a very large and relatively flat lake.
Nice place. Bit disappointed at the fact the map shows site 36 entrance facing north, when in fact it faces west. High difference where the sun is concerned. Enjoyed the camping night sounds. Patrons were pleasant during my stay. Kids would need to bring their own entertainment as I looked around (pavilion, boat launch, beach area, and 1-50 campsites) and saw nothing more than a volleyball net and vault toilets. Beach area is large enough to host a large family reunion, but bring extra tables and chairs for that. Trees are still growing so bring something to shade yourself in the beach area. Leashed dogs are welcomed. Dogs cannot swim in designated patron area. Beach is not so close to campsites, so be prepared to walk a bit, or you will drive approximately a mile to beach area. Only one water pump in camp area. Website has detailed map. No wake lake which is perfect for fisherfolk. If you like explore and do plant recognition this park is great. Hope it helps. Enjoy.
So happy to have found such a gem of park so close to home! The campgrounds are absolutely beautiful with wooded areas in-between most sites and some back up to the lake. The dark sky park is absolutely stunning!!! Hiking Trail is well maintained but not exactly clearly maked. Camped for the weekend and enjoyed the start of fall colors. Will most certainly be back soon! 5/5 would recommend. Only potential negative might be if you're tent camping the bathroom is far.
My family and I stayed at the campground for a couple of nights on site 47.
Pros:
-The campsite was large, clean, and very secluded! It was also fairly level.
-The campground was pretty quiet. A few people were playing music but turned it off by 9pm.
-The sky was clear and good for stargazing.
-The grassy beach area was clean and recently mowed.
-The staff member at the entrance was friendly and helpful in finding our campsite.
Cons:
-There was poison ivy everywhere bordering our campsite!
-The vault toilets were absolutely disgusting and the smell made them impossible to use.
-It seemed like there was no one working in the office whenever we stopped by and only saw DNR staff drive by a few times during our entire stay. They also weren't helpful at all when the power went out in the entire campground for a few hours.
-The lake water was pretty gross. It had lots of algae and melled like a swamp.
-Fishing was sub-par; just a ton of seaweed.
-There is no playground or swings, just a volleyball net.
-The electrical boxes are a distance from the sites, but that was easily fixed with a long extension cord.
Overall, it's an okay place to stay and we enjoyed ourselves but we won't be back. It just doesn't measure up to the other state parks in Michigan.
